Fractional CIO

A fractional CIO is a senior IT leader who works for your company part-time. They own your technology strategy, systems, vendors and IT risk, without the cost of a full-time executive.

What a Fractional CIO Does

IT strategy and roadmap
Systems and vendor selection
IT budget and spend control
Security and IT risk oversight
Cloud and infrastructure decisions
Data and reporting systems
Vendor and contract management
Leading the IT team or MSP
Board and leadership reporting on IT
Integration after an acquisition

Signs You Need a Fractional CIO

  • Nobody owns IT at the leadership table - Technology decisions are made by whoever is closest: the office manager, a founder, or your managed service provider.
  • IT spend is growing and nobody can explain it - Software subscriptions, licences and contracts pile up with no one checking what is used or needed.
  • A customer, auditor or insurer is asking security questions - You need someone senior to answer them and to own the fixes.
  • A big systems project is coming - A new ERP or CRM, a cloud move, or an office expansion needs someone to choose, plan and oversee it.
  • You are merging, acquiring or being acquired - Systems, data and vendors from two companies have to be combined or separated.

How Much Does a Fractional CIO Cost?

We don't publish a fractional CIO rate range. No reliable survey of fractional CIO rates exists, and we won't invent one.

What we can show is what the full-time alternative costs. BLS has no CIO occupation, so we use the closest one, Computer and Information Systems Managers (SOC 11-3021). We use the same figure for CTOs, CISOs and chief data officers. In May 2025:

  • Median salary: $175,140 a year
  • Mean salary: $192,160 a year
  • Mean salary plus benefits: about $281,130 a year (benefits at the all-worker average, so treat it as a floor)

One day a week of that loaded cost comes to about $56,226 a year (about $4,686 a month). That is a reference point for comparing quotes, not what a fractional CIO charges: a fractional executive sets their own fee and carries their own overheads, so expect quotes to differ from it.

Fractional vs Interim vs Full-Time CIO

Fractional CIO

You need senior IT leadership on an ongoing basis, but not every day.

A set number of days a week or month, ongoing.

Interim CIO

Your CIO has left, or a major change needs someone full-time for a while.

Full-time, for a fixed period, often a few months.

Full-time CIO

IT leadership is a daily job: a large team, many projects, board scrutiny.

Full-time and permanent.

How to Hire a Fractional CIO

  1. Write down the problem, not the title. "Cut our software spend and pass a customer security review by March" is a brief someone can quote against.
  2. Look for experience in a company like yours. Size, industry and the systems you run matter more than a famous former employer.
  3. Ask how they would spend the first 30 days, and what they would need from you.
  4. Speak to two references from companies they worked with part-time, not only full-time employers.
  5. Agree days, outcomes and a review date in writing, and check whether they will work with your current IT provider.
