What a Fractional Chief Data Officer Does
Signs You Need a Fractional Chief Data Officer
- Two reports give two different answers - Finance, sales and product each count customers or revenue their own way.
- You pay for data tools nobody trusts - Dashboards exist, but decisions are still made from spreadsheets.
- You want to use AI on your own data - The data is scattered, unlabelled or not allowed to be used that way, and nobody knows which.
- A customer, partner or regulator asks how you handle data - You need someone who can explain what you hold, where it lives and who can see it.
- Your first data hire needs a leader - An analyst or engineer is doing good work with no direction from above.
How Much Does a Fractional Chief Data Officer Cost?
We don't publish a fractional chief data officer rate range. No reliable survey of fractional chief data officer rates exists, and we won't invent one.
What we can show is what the full-time alternative costs. BLS has no chief data officer occupation, so we use the closest one, Computer and Information Systems Managers (SOC 11-3021). We use the same figure for CTOs, CIOs and CISOs. In May 2025:
- Median salary: $175,140 a year
- Mean salary: $192,160 a year
- Mean salary plus benefits: about $281,130 a year (benefits at the all-worker average, so treat it as a floor)
One day a week of that loaded cost comes to about $56,226 a year (about $4,686 a month). That is a reference point for comparing quotes, not what a fractional chief data officer charges: a fractional executive sets their own fee and carries their own overheads, so expect quotes to differ from it.

How to Hire a Fractional Chief Data Officer
- Write down the decisions you can't make today because the data is missing or untrusted. That list is the brief.
- Look for someone who has built this at your size. Large-company data leaders are used to big teams and budgets.
- Ask what they would fix first and how you would know in 90 days that it worked.
- Check they can work with what you have. Replacing your whole data stack is rarely the first step.
- Agree days, outcomes and a review date in writing.
